Pregnancy is one of the most transformative experiences a woman can go through, and for many women living in Dubai and across the UAE, it also brings an unexpected companion: back and pelvic pain. As a physiotherapist who works closely with women through every stage of pregnancy, I want to help you understand why this pain occurs and what you can do to feel more comfortable every day.
Why Does Pregnancy Cause Back and Pelvic Pain?
During pregnancy, your body undergoes profound hormonal and structural changes. A hormone called relaxin is released, which loosens the ligaments in your pelvis to prepare for childbirth. While this is entirely necessary, it can also reduce the stability of the joints in your lower back and pelvis, leading to pain and discomfort.
As your baby grows, your centre of gravity shifts forward. Your lower back is then forced to work harder to keep you upright, which can cause muscle fatigue and strain. The growing uterus also places pressure on surrounding nerves and tissues, which can radiate pain down into the hips and thighs.
Common Types of Pregnancy-Related Pain
Lower Back Pain
This is the most frequently reported complaint. It typically feels like a dull ache across the lower back that worsens after prolonged sitting, standing, or activity. Many women in the UAE find it particularly challenging during long hours at a desk or while navigating the demands of daily life in a busy city.
Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP)
Pelvic girdle pain affects the joints at the front and back of your pelvis. You might notice sharp or stabbing sensations when walking, climbing stairs, turning over in bed, or standing on one leg. It can range from mildly uncomfortable to quite limiting.
Sciatica
When pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve, pain can shoot down one or both legs. This tingling, burning, or aching sensation is a common concern during the second and third trimesters.
Practical Ways to Manage Pain During Pregnancy
- Maintain good posture when sitting and standing, keeping your weight evenly distributed across both feet.
- Use a supportive pillow between your knees when sleeping on your side to reduce pelvic strain.
- Avoid twisting movements; instead, turn your whole body as one unit.
- Wear supportive footwear, especially if you are walking frequently around Dubai.
- Apply warmth to the lower back to ease muscle tension.
- Stay active with gentle, pregnancy-appropriate movement such as walking or swimming.
Every pregnancy is unique. Pain that feels manageable for one woman may be significantly limiting for another. There is no single solution that works for everyone, and that is perfectly normal.
When Should You Seek Professional Advice?
If your pain is severe, getting worse, affecting your sleep, or stopping you from completing daily activities, it is important to seek guidance. Pain that is accompanied by numbness, tingling, or any changes in bladder or bowel function should be assessed promptly.
Physiotherapy during pregnancy focuses on safe, evidence-based strategies to support your body through each trimester. This can include targeted exercises to strengthen the deep stabilising muscles of your pelvis and core, postural education, and hands-on techniques where appropriate.
You do not have to simply endure discomfort as part of pregnancy. With the right guidance, most women experience significant relief and are able to remain active and comfortable throughout.
If you are experiencing back or pelvic pain during your pregnancy, I encourage you to book a consultation with Dr. Smruti Rathod so I can discuss a plan that is right for you.
