This is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive, especially from people who are new to Dubai or to the UAE in general. The short answer is: in most cases, no, you do not need a referral to consult a physiotherapist. But there is important context worth understanding.

The UAE Healthcare Landscape

The UAE has a well-developed healthcare system, regulated in Dubai by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and in Abu Dhabi by the Department of Health (DoH). Physiotherapy is a licensed, regulated profession under the DHA, and licensed physiotherapists are qualified to assess and advise patients independently, without a doctor first directing you to them.

Direct Access to Physiotherapy

Direct access means you can seek a physiotherapy consultation based on your own initiative. This is standard practice in many countries, including the UK, Australia, and increasingly across the Gulf. In Dubai and the broader UAE, many residents do exactly this. They notice a problem with their back, shoulder, knee, or posture, and they reach out to a physiotherapist directly to understand what is going on.

Physiotherapists are primary healthcare professionals. We are trained to assess, diagnose movement and musculoskeletal conditions, and determine whether your situation requires collaboration with another medical specialty. You do not need a referral to have that initial conversation.

When a Referral or Medical Opinion Is Still Valuable

While direct access is available, there are situations where having a medical opinion alongside physiotherapy care makes good sense:

  • If you have had imaging such as an MRI or X-ray and want those findings incorporated into your assessment
  • If your symptoms are complex, involve multiple body systems, or include unexplained weight loss, fever, or other systemic signs
  • If you are managing a chronic condition such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, or post-surgical recovery where a specialist is already involved
  • If your employer or a third party requires formal documentation of a medical condition

In these cases, physiotherapy and medical care work hand in hand. I often communicate with GPs, orthopaedic surgeons, and other specialists as part of a shared care approach, which is common in Dubai's multi-specialty healthcare environment.

Expatriate Residents: What You Should Know

A large proportion of Dubai's population are expatriates from countries where GP referrals are mandatory for specialist care. It is understandable to assume the same applies here. But UAE healthcare is designed with a degree of patient autonomy in mind, and you have more freedom to seek the right professional for your concern than you might expect.

My Advice

If you have a musculoskeletal concern, a movement problem, pain that is affecting your daily life, or simply questions about your posture or physical wellbeing, you do not need to wait for a referral. Reach out, ask your questions, and get informed. Knowledge about your own body is always a good starting point.

If you are unsure whether physiotherapy is the right place to start for your particular concern, feel free to book a consultation with Dr. Smruti Rathod and I can work through it together.
