A total knee replacement (TKR) is one of the most commonly performed orthopaedic procedures in the world, and here in Dubai I see many patients who have recently undergone this surgery and are wondering what comes next. The good news is that with the right rehabilitation approach, most people go on to regain strong, functional knees that allow them to live active lives.
What Happens to Your Knee During Surgery?
During a TKR, the damaged cartilage and bone surfaces of your knee joint are removed and replaced with metal and plastic implants. The goal is to restore the joint surface so that movement becomes pain-free. However, the surrounding muscles, tendons and soft tissues still need time and guided effort to regain their strength and flexibility.
The Phases of Recovery
Weeks 1 to 2: Early Mobility
The priority in the first two weeks is reducing swelling, managing discomfort and beginning gentle movement. Simple exercises like ankle pumps, quad sets and short-arc knee extensions begin almost immediately. Getting up and walking with an assistive device is encouraged early because movement promotes circulation and healing.
Weeks 3 to 6: Building Strength
As swelling settles, exercises become more progressive. Straight-leg raises, mini squats and step-ups are introduced gradually. Regaining full knee extension is particularly important during this phase, as any persistent bend in the knee can become difficult to correct later.
Months 2 to 3: Functional Recovery
By this stage, most people are walking independently and working on climbing stairs, getting in and out of a car, and returning to light daily activities. Balance and proprioception training also become a focus, which is especially important for navigating Dubai's mix of tiled floors, ramps and uneven outdoor surfaces.
Common Challenges and How to Address Them
- Stiffness: Heat application before exercises and ice after can help manage stiffness and swelling.
- Fear of movement: It is completely normal to feel apprehensive. Graduated, guided movement is safe and necessary.
- Muscle weakness: The quadriceps in particular can lose significant strength after surgery. Consistent daily exercise is the most effective remedy.
- Swelling: Some swelling is expected for several months. Elevation and compression help manage this.
Recovery from a knee replacement is not a straight line, but every small milestone matters. Consistency with rehabilitation is the single biggest predictor of a good outcome.
Living in Dubai After a Knee Replacement
Dubai's lifestyle presents some specific considerations. Air-conditioned environments can sometimes make joints feel stiffer, so warming up before activity is important. Walking on the beach or in parks like Safa Park can provide excellent low-impact exercise once you are ready. Many of my patients find that the warm climate here actually supports their recovery well.
When to Seek Guidance
If you are experiencing unexpected pain, significant swelling, redness or warmth around the joint, or if your recovery seems to have plateaued, it is important to seek professional advice. Every person's recovery timeline is different, and a tailored physiotherapy plan makes a real difference.
